The city great as an agricultural hub, with many sawmills opening in the 1850s. Many of the mills and houses owned by Archibald Gardner have been renovated as part of the Gardner Village area.

The South Valley Regional Airport is in the central part of the area. The general aviation airport is a training base for the Utah Army National Guard and also has a maintenance center and a helicopter flight school.

The Jordan School District serves most of the students in the area, while the Granite School District covers a few northern areas. The main campus of Salt Lake Community College is also in the area.
