The history of the area goes back before the arrival of European invaders in the 1600s. Much of the San Francisco area was home to the Ohlone people. In the area specifically, the Puichon Ohlone. Gaspar de Portola was one of the first people to record the area for future establishment of a mission. Portola would describe the area to Father Junipero Serra by one singular landscape feature, a tall redwood (the same ones that make California famous for all tree lovers). The large tree, part of the largest species of tree on the planet, was described as the the area.

Across the San Francisquito Creek, Father Junipero Serra established Mission Santa Clara de Asis, and established Christian missionary border schools in order to whitewash the Indian children. Despite his best intentions this lead to the cultural genocide of an entire people, and would lead the nation down a rabbit hole of evangelizing and viewing of the entire world through a Christian lens.
