Fairfield, Connecticut, is a city directly west of New Haven and east of Norwalk. The city is on the shore of Long Island Sound. Fairfield has a population of about 60,000.

There are more than five miles of coastline on the Long Island Sound on the southern end of Fairfield. The coastline is home to five local beaches. Some privately owned beach spaces are open to the public under the high tide mark. Fairfield, Connecticut, was settled in 1639 by Puritans and Congregationalists from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Fairfield would break off into several other cities in the area, including Bridgeport and Redding. Fairfield was burned down by British forces in 1779, but the city would soon rebuild. The city would continue to grow as a prominent suburban site, and housed the world headquarters for General Electric until 2017 when the company moved to Boston.

Fairfield is about 40 miles northeast of the Bronx. Fairfield links to New York City through Interstate 95. There are also three stations on the Metro-North Railroad system’s New Haven Line in Fairfield. The line leads people directly to New York’s Grand Central Station.

Sacred Heart University and Fairfield University are both in the. These are both private Roman Catholic universities. Each of these schools serves about 5,000 students every year.

Fairfield used to be filled with windmills, but only one remains today. The Bronson Windmill is 80 feet high and has been operational since 1893.
